BCDU Brings English Courses to Cloverfield

Starting this quarter, BCDU is back in session! Over the next two months, 16 Beavers will have the chance to develop their written and oral English in a new program staffed entirely by BCD team members. As an intercontinental team, we’re always striving to improve how we communicate, and speaking English is an especially valuable skill for supporting our international clientele. A BCD resource for several years, Blue Clover Devices University is more than a training center: it’s a learning and sharing community for all Beavers, and an opportunity for all of us to grow. BCDU offers workshops, historical and

BCD Celebrates Our 4th Annual Oktoberfest!

Since 2012, we Beavers have welcomed the fall season with a renewed zest for life, embracing mindfulness and leaving negativity behind us! For BCD, Oktoberfest is a reminder of how important mutual support is to our success as a team, and an encouragement to keep striving for a positive view of life.  This year, we’re shifting our perspective to find the beauty in our everyday lives. Through “Discover,” the theme of the Y2015 Oktoberfest Photo Contest, our Beavers will capture the loveliness they observe around them with their own photography. Between this contest and the official Y2016 Blue Clover Devices

Charge Anywhere: BCD and Doblet Team Up for On Demand Battery Network

A dying phone is a frustration most of us accept as the price of mobile technology. But Doktor Gurson’s tech startup, Doblet, is making it possible for mobile device users to leave home without worrying about their next charge. Gurson’s solution to the dead battery is as simple in practice as it is in theory: the company distributes its proprietary chargers to local venues (in San Francisco, there are already more than 100 “hotspots,” and counting), and the app shows users where to find the nearest venue to recharge their device. After getting their first charge for free, they can either pay per charge or a flat rate for

Blue Clover Devices Settles into SoMa

The South Park office has changed a lot since we moved to San Francisco last February. Over the last several months, BCD has worked hard to bring this beautiful old building into the 21st century while preserving the things that make it unique. These days, South Park is a blend of vintage style and hi-tech convenience. Its vaulted ceilings, brick walls, and functioning lift are in contrast to the rows of Apple monitors and Bretford smart chairs. But it’s the small details, like the antique stove in the kitchen, or the functioning gas lamp in the upstairs bathroom, that bring everything together. Its past as a photography studio

BlueBook

Blue Clover Devices stays on top of its game with the help of BlueBook. Featuring diagrams, workflows, and checklists, our company operation manual keeps all our departments and job functions running smoothly. All employees can refer to this standardized handbook with procedural questions, and new hires can get up to speed on our processes quickly and easily. This essential system is what keeps your project on schedule even as BCD continues to grow. Each stage of the product design and manufacturing process has its own distinct chapter: DevFlow, NPIFlow, and OrderFlow. We also have a chapter for routine processes across

How We Do It

Many modern companies use their own management systems to administer their complex internal processes. Passionate about excellence, at Blue Clover Devices we have developed our own tailor-made system to stay organized and on schedule. Our custom management system grows as our company does, responding to our needs as they change over time. This holistic approach to self-management enables BCD to tackle your project efficiently and cost-effectively, while still keeping you in the loop. The three components of this system—which we call BlueDiamond, BlueBook, and TrueBlue—function interdependently throughout the complex production process. Thanks to this architecture, BCD can manage its internal processes with

How We Became an ODM

Blue Clover Devices was formed in 2003 as Blue Clover Design, LLC. We wanted to be a design house but we didn’t know what product to make, not to mention how to sell it. We were young and dumb, but fortunately we knew it. Suffice it to say, our business plan was pretty straightforward:  1) Design a product and try to sell it 2) Design another product and try to sell it 3) Reevaluate the situation Without getting into the nitty-gritty details, our first product was a soil moisture meter network with sensors reporting measurements back to a handheld console.

Why we do IoT

Our mission at Blue Clover Devices is to leverage the power of IoT to eliminate waste in all its forms and make a more beautiful world. The most flagrant form of waste is the design, production, shipping, and fulfillment of a defective product. With the knowhow that mankind has amassed over the years, it’s breathtaking how often we shuffle around horrible products that should never have been made in the first place. Let me give you an example. Recently, my wife and I purchased a wall clock online, which I hung up in our den. About ten minutes later, the second

Why I love Shenzhen

I just got back from Shenzhen. Going there is always invigorating because time and again I am inspired by its ingrained can-do spirit for building hardware. Here is an example: about a month ago we decided to move forward with a new state-of-the-art Yamaha SMT line for assembling PCBs. Our Operations Director gave Judy and me a detailed action plan:   1. Make sure the floor can support the equipment 2. Cut hole in the building (we are on the 3rd floor and the equipment won’t fit in the elevator) 3. Build enviro-controlled room 4. Install equipment 5. Assemble boards with

Considering THE IoT ODM

IoT Is Changing the World as We Know It IoT, or the Internet of Things, is a market on the verge, and technology this revolutionary demands an infrastructure that matches it in innovation. To capitalize on this potential, forward-looking hardware brands recognize they need a new approach to design and manufacturing. As the lines between the “real” world and the Internet continue to blur, partnering with an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM)—which features IoT design and manufacturing in-house—is the key to participating in this future of connectivity. From smart thermometers to connected cars, these products and services represent a market poised to explode. Adapting old design and manufacturing
